Everything You Need to Know Before Your Journey Through Portugal

Planning Your Trip
Why Choose Portugal?
Portugal is one of Europe's most captivating destinations, combining rich culture, exceptional hospitality and remarkable diversity within a compact and easy-to-explore country.
From vibrant cities and historic towns to dramatic coastlines, rolling vineyards and unspoilt countryside, Portugal offers an extraordinary variety of experiences without the need for extensive travel between regions. In a single journey, you can enjoy world-class gastronomy, award-winning wines, centuries of history, beautiful landscapes and authentic local traditions.

Portugal is also renowned for its warm and welcoming people, making visitors feel at home from the moment they arrive. English is widely spoken, the country is exceptionally safe, and the pace of life encourages travellers to slow down and savour each experience.
For food and wine lovers, Portugal remains one of Europe's best-kept secrets. From Michelin-starred restaurants and historic wine estates to family-run taverns serving regional specialities, the country's culinary heritage is both diverse and deeply authentic.

Beyond the well-known highlights, Portugal rewards curious travellers with hidden villages, artisan workshops, private estates, traditional festivals and exclusive experiences that reveal a more intimate side of the country.
Perhaps most importantly, Portugal offers a sense of authenticity that has become increasingly rare. While modern and sophisticated, it remains deeply connected to its traditions, landscapes and communities, creating meaningful travel experiences that stay with you long after you return home.
Whether you are seeking culture, gastronomy, wellness, adventure, family connection or simply time to unwind, Portugal offers an exceptional backdrop for a truly memorable journey.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Portugal?
One of Portugal's greatest advantages as a travel destination is that it can be enjoyed year-round. The best time to visit ultimately depends on the experiences you are seeking.

Spring (March–May) is one of the most beautiful times to explore Portugal. The countryside is lush and green, wildflowers are in bloom, temperatures are pleasant, and popular attractions remain relatively uncrowded. It is an ideal season for cultural touring, wine regions, gardens, walking tours and scenic drives.
Summer (June–August) brings long sunny days, lively festivals and vibrant coastal life. The beaches of the Algarve, Comporta and the Atlantic coast are at their finest, while evenings are perfect for outdoor dining and sunset experiences. This is the most popular time to visit, particularly in July and August, when advance planning is highly recommended.

Autumn (September–October) is often considered Portugal's best-kept secret. The weather remains warm and sunny, the sea is still inviting, and the summer crowds begin to fade. It is also harvest season in Portugal's wine regions, making it a wonderful time to experience vineyards, gastronomy and rural Portugal at its most authentic.
Winter (November–February) offers a quieter and more relaxed side of Portugal. While northern regions can be cooler, much of the country enjoys mild temperatures compared with the rest of Europe. This is an excellent season for city breaks, food and wine experiences, luxury hotels, wellness retreats and exploring cultural treasures without the crowds.
For travellers seeking the ideal balance of pleasant weather, authentic experiences and fewer visitors, we recommend April to June and September to October. These months offer the very best of Portugal, combining beautiful conditions with a more relaxed atmosphere.
Madeira & The Azores
The islands of Madeira and the Azores are wonderful additions to a Portugal journey and can be visited throughout the year.

Madeira enjoys a spring-like climate in every season, while the Azores are particularly beautiful from late spring through early autumn. Whatever time of year you choose to visit, Portugal rewards travellers with exceptional hospitality, remarkable landscapes, outstanding gastronomy and experiences that can be tailored to every season.

Portugal enjoys a pleasant climate throughout much of the year, but a little preparation will help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip.

Portugal's historic towns and cities are famous for their charming cobbled streets, scenic viewpoints and pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods. We recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes with good grip, particularly if you plan to explore Lisbon, Porto, Sintra or other historic destinations.
We suggest packing versatile clothing that can be layered throughout the day, as temperatures can vary between morning, afternoon and evening.
During the warmer months, lightweight clothing is ideal, although a light sweater or jacket is recommended for cooler evenings. In the winter months, a waterproof jacket and warmer layers will ensure you remain comfortable in changing weather conditions.
If your itinerary includes the Azores, we strongly recommend bringing a waterproof jacket regardless of the season, as weather conditions can change quickly throughout the islands.

Portugal enjoys abundant sunshine throughout the year. We recommend travelling with sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, even during the spring and winter months.
If in doubt, pack light. Portugal's relaxed yet elegant atmosphere lends itself to comfortable, smart-casual attire, and our team is always happy to provide destination-specific packing advice based on the season and regions included in your itinerary.
Portugal operates on a 220V / 50Hz electrical system and uses Type F plugs with two round pins, as found throughout much of continental Europe. Travellers from countries using different voltages or plug types should bring a suitable travel adaptor and, where necessary, a voltage converter for personal electrical devices.

We want your arrival in Portugal to be as seamless and stress-free as possible. Below are a few practical details to help you prepare for your journey.

Upon arrival, your private driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall, holding a sign displaying the lead traveller's name. They will escort you directly to your hotel, where you can either check in or leave your luggage with the concierge should your room not yet be available.
Standard hotel check-in time in Portugal is typically from 3:00pm onwards. If you require guaranteed early access to your room, our team can arrange this in advance, subject to availability and an additional charge.
Guaranteed early check-in is usually only possible when the hotel room is reserved from the previous night. However, many of our hotel partners will gladly accommodate an early arrival whenever rooms become available, and we are always happy to make a request on your behalf.

Most of our hotel partners offer professional laundry and dry-cleaning services for guests. While many hotels provide steamers or ironing facilities, availability can vary. If you require perfectly pressed clothing during your travels, most hotels offer professional laundry and pressing services. Please note that self-service laundry facilities are uncommon in Portugal's luxury hotels.
Many of the experiences included in your itinerary offer hotel pick-up and drop-off. Where this is not included, we will provide detailed joining instructions, including a Google Maps link and directions.
In most cases, meeting points are within comfortable walking distance of your hotel. Occasionally, a short taxi or Uber journey may be required.
Unlike some countries, Portugal does not have a strong tipping culture, and gratuities are always discretionary. Should you wish to recognise exceptional service, we will provide suggested tipping guidelines within your final itinerary to help you navigate local customs with confidence.

Portugal is home to some of Europe's most beautiful churches, monasteries and religious sites. When visiting these locations, we recommend dressing respectfully.
As a general guide
❖ Skirts, dresses and shorts should be approximately knee length.
❖ Hats should be removed when entering religious buildings.
❖ Beachwear and flip-flops should be avoided.
❖ Shoulders should be covered.

Portugal is largely a card-friendly destination, and credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout the country.
We do recommend carrying a small amount of cash for incidental purchases, local markets and smaller establishments. As a guide, many couples find that €300–€500 is more than sufficient for a one-week journey.
Should you require additional cash during your travels, we recommend using Multibanco ATMs, Portugal's national banking network. We advise avoiding Euronet ATMs, as they often charge significantly higher withdrawal and currency conversion fees.
One of the greatest benefits of travelling with Classic Portugal Travel is knowing that expert local support is always just a message away.
From the moment you arrive in Portugal until your journey comes to an end, our team remains available to assist with recommendations, reservations, unexpected changes and any questions that may arise along the way.

While you are travelling, a member of the Classic Portugal Travel team will always be on call to support you.
Whether you need local advice, assistance with your itinerary or help resolving an unexpected issue, you can contact Hayley, Ricardo and our team directly through the Trip App or by telephone. We are here to ensure your journey runs as smoothly and effortlessly as possible.

Exceptional dining is an important part of experiencing Portugal.
Prior to your arrival, we will provide a carefully curated selection of our favourite restaurants, ranging from authentic local gems and family-run establishments to Michelin-starred dining experiences.

Should you wish, our concierge team can arrange restaurant reservations on your behalf, ensuring you have access to the most sought-after tables during your stay. We strongly recommend booking in advance, particularly during peak travel periods.
While we hope your travels are completely trouble-free, you can travel with confidence knowing support is available should you need it.
In the event of an emergency, your first point of contact should be the Classic Portugal Travel team. We can help coordinate assistance, liaise with hotels and local partners, and provide guidance when required.
Portugal's emergency services can be reached by dialling 112, and we also maintain a network of trusted English-speaking medical professionals who can provide hotel visits when appropriate.

Should you make purchases during your travels, you may be eligible for a VAT (sales tax) refund when departing the European Union.
Your final itinerary includes guidance on the tax refund process, and our team is always happy to answer questions and point you towards the latest official information to help make the process straightforward and hassle-free.
The greatest luxury is not simply where you stay or what you experience—it's knowing that every detail has been thoughtfully planned and that expert assistance is always available when you need it.
That's the reassurance of travelling with Classic Portugal Travel.
