Retirement marks the beginning of a new chapter, and for Bob and Janet from Connecticut, there seemed no better way to celebrate than by discovering a country they had heard so much about from friends.
Rather than rushing from landmark to landmark, they wanted exactly the opposite: ten unhurried days exploring Portugal's quieter places, enjoying exceptional food and wine, and experiencing the country at a relaxed pace.
Together, we designed a journey that balanced charming historic towns, mountain landscapes, elegant countryside hotels and unforgettable culinary experiences.
The Brief
Bob and Janet were looking for:

- Time to simply enjoy Portugal rather than tick off attractions
Their route took them through some of Portugal's lesser-known treasures, proving that the country's greatest experiences are often found away from the busiest tourist destinations.
Journey Highlights
The Douro Valley
The Douro provided one of the most memorable days of the holiday. Surrounded by vineyard-covered hillsides, Bob and Janet enjoyed a leisurely winery lunch paired with exceptional regional wines while overlooking one of Europe's most spectacular wine landscapes.
Serra da Estrela
One of the greatest surprises of the trip was Portugal's highest mountain range. The dramatic granite landscapes, peaceful mountain villages and sweeping views offered exactly the slower pace guided hikes they had hoped to find. Bob and Janet felt immersed in an authentic, natural side of Portugal.
Timeless Évora
Wandering the cobbled streets of Évora, discovering Roman ruins, quiet squares and centuries of history, became another favourite part of their journey. With plenty of time to walk the historic city, enjoy coffee and simply soak uo the atmosphere, the city perfectly suited their style of travel.
Favourite Hotel
Convento do Espinheiro, Évora
Their favourite hotel was the magnificent Convento do Espinheiro Historic Hotel & Spa.Set within a beautifully restored 15th-century convent just outside Évora, it combined centuries of history with contemporary luxury. Peaceful gardens, elegant rooms and exceptional service made it the perfect place to slow down and savour each day.

Favourite Dining Experience
Lunch at the Douro Winery
While every meal was memorable, their standout experience came during a leisurely winery lunch in the Douro Valley. Seasonal Portuguese cuisine was paired with wines produced just metres from their table, all enjoyed with panoramic views across the terraced vineyards. It perfectly captured everything they loved about Portugal: wonderful food, genuine hospitality and breathtaking scenery.
A Moment They'll Never Forget
The Winemaker's Choice
One experience stood above all the others. Rather than selecting a bottle themselves, the winemaker personally chose a wine that reflected the character of the estate and the vintage. The bottle was signed, carefully wrapped and presented to Bob and Janet to take home—a lasting reminder of both Bob's retirement celebration and an unforgettable journey through Portugal. Sometimes the most meaningful souvenirs aren't bought in a shop—they're gifted through genuine connection.

"One of my favourite things about designing this journey was knowing that Bob and Janet weren't looking to see everything. Instead, they wanted to truly experience Portugal. By slowing the pace, spending longer in each destination and introducing them to places beyond the usual tourist route, their journey became richer, more personal and ultimately far more memorable. It's a wonderful reminder that luxury travel isn't about how much you see—it's about how deeply you experience it."
