At Classic Portugal Travel, custom travel doesn't mean taking an existing Portugal itinerary and changing a few hotels or adding an extra night.
We start with you.
Before deciding where you should stay or what you should see, we want to understand how you actually like to travel.
❖ Perhaps you love exceptional food and wine but have little interest in spending every day visiting monuments
❖ Maybe you want to discover Portugal's history but prefer exploring with an engaging private guide rather than following a large group.
❖ You might be travelling with children who need adventure mixed in with sightseeing, celebrating an important anniversary, or simply want enough time to sit beside the pool and enjoy the hotel you've paid to stay in.
You don't even need to know exactly where in Portugal you want to go. That's where our expertise comes in. We use our first-hand knowledge of Portugal, together with our network of trusted local partners, to create your journey from the ground up — considering the route, hotels, private guides, experiences, restaurants, transportation and, importantly, the pace of your trip.
The result isn't simply a custom Portugal itinerary. It's your version of Portugal.

How We Create Your Custom Trip to Portugal
Every Classic Portugal journey begins with a conversation. We want to know what has brought you to Portugal, what you love doing when you travel and what would make this particular trip memorable. From there, we begin connecting the pieces.
If food and wine are important to you, that might mean building part of your journey around the Douro Valley, introducing you to smaller wine producers and arranging memorable vineyard lunches.
If you love the coast, we might take you beyond Portugal's most famous beaches to fishing villages, dramatic Atlantic landscapes and restaurants where the day's catch is the reason for going.
If you're fascinated by history, we can introduce you to specialist private guides who don't simply tell you dates and facts, but bring Portugal's extraordinary past to life.
And sometimes our advice will be to do less. One of the advantages of having a trip individually designed is that there is no standard itinerary telling us that you need to visit five destinations simply because you have two weeks available. Your journey can breathe.

The Right Portugal for You
Search for a Portugal itinerary online and you'll quickly encounter the same route: Lisbon. Sintra. Porto. Douro Valley. Algarve. They are all wonderful places. But that doesn't mean they all belong in your trip.
One traveller might adore three days exploring Lisbon's history, architecture and restaurants. Another would happily spend one night there before disappearing into the Alentejo countryside. Someone passionate about wine may want several nights in the Douro. Someone who isn't particularly interested in wine might enjoy that time far more exploring Portugal's Atlantic coast.
Portugal also extends far beyond its most famous destinations. There are historic towns, mountain landscapes, tiny villages, family-run wineries, beautiful rural hotels and extraordinary stretches of coastline that many international visitors never encounter. Because Portugal is all we do, our role isn't simply to tell you where everyone goes. It's to work out where you should go.

You Spend Your Time on the Things You Actually Enjoy
This may be the greatest benefit of custom travel. Your vacation time is limited. Why spend it doing things you don't particularly enjoy? If you don't like museums, we don't need to fill your itinerary with museums. If you've already toured several European palaces and the thought of another one doesn't excite you, we'll find something else.
If you love cooking, surfing, photography, architecture, hiking, golf, ceramics or wine, those interests can become part of the journey. And if your favourite part of travelling is discovering beautiful hotels, eating extremely well and having plenty of time to enjoy both, that's perfectly acceptable too.
Custom travel allows the itinerary to reflect your interests rather than somebody else's idea of what a trip to Portugal is supposed to look like.

You Discover Places You Might Never Have Found Yourself
Planning a trip online gives you access to an enormous amount of information. The problem is that everyone has access to the same information. The same hotels appear repeatedly. The same restaurants dominate travel articles. The same day trips feature on countless itineraries. Local knowledge changes that.
Classic Portugal is based in Portugal. We live here, travel throughout the country and continually discover new hotels, restaurants, guides, winemakers and experiences. Our network includes local experts, chefs, artisans, hoteliers and people whose knowledge of their particular corner of Portugal goes far beyond anything you'll find in a generic travel guide.
That doesn't mean avoiding famous places simply because they're famous. If this is your first visit to Portugal, you may absolutely want to stand beneath the extraordinary architecture of Lisbon, explore Porto or visit a beautiful palace in Sintra. But we'll also show you what lies between those places. And very often, those become the moments travellers remember most.

Your Hotels Are Chosen for You — Not for Their Star Rating
A five-star hotel isn't automatically the right hotel. Location, atmosphere, room style, service, size and character can make an enormous difference to your experience. Some travellers love grand historic hotels. Others would choose an intimate 20-room boutique property every time.
Families may need connecting rooms or modern hotels with rooftop pools. Couples celebrating an anniversary may prioritise privacy and atmosphere. Another traveller may happily choose a simpler hotel in one destination so they can splurge on an extraordinary wine estate somewhere else.
We select hotels because they make sense within your journey. Not simply because they appear on a list of Portugal's best luxury hotels.

Your Trip Has the Right Pace
It is surprisingly easy to ruin an otherwise wonderful Portugal vacation by trying to see too much! Lisbon for two nights. Porto for two. Douro for two. Drive south. Another hotel. Another tour. Another suitcase. Technically, it works. Whether it feels like a vacation is another matter.
Custom travel allows us to consider the journey as a whole. We look at driving times, hotel changes, busy sightseeing days and quieter days. We consider when you'll want a private guide and when you'll probably be happier exploring alone. Sometimes the best addition we can make to an itinerary is nothing at all.
❖ A free afternoon in Porto.
❖ A slow morning in the Algarve.
❖ Time for another glass of wine after lunch without looking at the clock.
A great custom itinerary isn't about fitting the maximum number of experiences into your vacation. It's about creating the right ones.

The Logistics Disappear Into the Background
There is another side to custom travel that isn't particularly glamorous — but makes an enormous difference once you're actually here. Logistics. How are you getting from Lisbon to the Douro? What happens to your luggage? Where exactly is your driver meeting you? Do you need tickets? How long should you allow between two experiences? Is the restaurant anywhere near your hotel? Who do you contact if something changes?
Classic Portugal coordinates every aspect of your trip: your hotels, private transportation, guides, experiences and reservations so the different parts of your journey work together.
Before you arrive, your itinerary, reservations, travel information and documents are organised within your personal travel app. During your journey, our Portugal-based team remains available should you need assistance. You still have the freedom of travelling independently. You simply aren't doing it alone.

Is Custom Travel in Portugal Worth It?
If you love spending months researching hotels, arranging transportation, comparing tours, making restaurant reservations and coordinating every detail yourself, planning your own trip to Portugal can be enormously enjoyable.
Custom travel offers something different. You're investing in local expertise, personalisation, carefully selected experiences, seamless logistics and the reassurance of having a team in Portugal looking after your journey. But perhaps its greatest value is simpler than that.
You have a limited number of days in Portugal. We help you spend them well. Not rushing through somebody else's checklist. Not visiting somewhere simply because everyone says you should. Not wondering whether the wonderful little hotel you discovered online is actually three hours away from everything else you've planned.
Instead, you experience a Portugal that has been carefully considered around you.

Your Portugal. Designed Around You.
For us, custom travel isn't about making a vacation more complicated. It's about making it feel effortless. You tell us what you love, what interests you and how you want to feel when you're here. We'll use our local knowledge and trusted connections to take care of the rest. Because the best trip to Portugal isn't necessarily the one that sees the most. It's the one that feels entirely your own.
